In the 1600s few children went to school. Instead they learned what they needed by working alongside adults. The city's school was only for boys and was located beside the cathedral. Most pupils would eventually become priests. The language used for lessons was Latin not Swedish. The pupils studied such subjects as Greek, Hebrew, Christianity, mathematics and history. Many of the pupils were poor. To support themslves they had the right to go begging out in the countryside. That was what the school holidays were for - not to rest but to beg enough food for the next term. Some of the teachers also begged for money.
