The route to the top went via war. The powerful men in Gothenburg came from the army. Rutger von Ascheberg was born in Latvia and became a career soldier with the Swedes. He ended up as a commander and count and the governor of Skåne, Halland, Gothenburg and Bohuslän. He was buried in the German Church in Gothenburg, in the Ascheberg burial chapel, which he had ordered to be built. Aschebergsgatan street was named after him.
