Den skotskfödde affärsmannen Colin Campbell (1686-1757) var en av de tre grundarna av Svenska Ostindiska Compagniet och med sina kunskaper om handel på Indien och Kina den betydelsefullaste personen i förestagets ledning. Han blev svensk medborgare 1731 och levde i Göteborg till sin död. Som förste superkarg, försedd med fullmakt som den svenske kungens sändebud till kejsaren av Kina, ledde han Compagniets första resa (1732-33). Vid ett holländskt anfall i Sundasundet under återfärden från Canton lät han själv förstöra sin resejournal för att inte affärshemligheter skulle falla i holländarnas händer. 1986 lyckades emellertid Göteborgs historiska museum från USA förvärva en hittills okänd egenhändig rekonstruktion av dagboken som Campbell fullbordade efter hemkomsten till Göteborg. Här skildras i detalj den äventyrliga resans besvärligheter, till stor del orsakade av den försupne kaptenens försummelser. Dessutom ger den stora foliovolymen (287 sidor) bl a ovärderliga uppgifter om affärstransaktioner i Kanton, t ex tillgång och priser på te, siden och porslin. Ett likaledes handskrivet häfte (GMA:13035) som förvärvades samtidigt innehåller Campbells dagböcker från två senare resor till Kina (1735-36 och 1738-39). Här handlar det mest om själva seglingen, väderförhållanden och iakttagelser till sjöss. [trol förf av Christian Axel Nilsson och Paul Hallberg ]; The Scottish-born businessman Colin Campbell (1686-1757) was one ot the three founding directors of the Swedish East India Company and, with his previous experience of trading with India and China, the most significant person in the Company’s management. He obtained Swedish citizenship in 1731 and lived in Gothenburg until his death. As first supercargo Campbell was in charge of the Company’s first expedition (1732-33), acting also as Minister Plenipotentiary of the King of Sweden to the Chinese Emperor. When the Dutch attacked the ship in the Straits of Sunda as it returned from Canton, Campbell had his account of the voyage destroyed so that the Dutch would learn nothing of the Company’s affairs. In 1986, however, the Historical Museum of Gothenburg acquired a previously unknown autograph reconstruction of the diary, completed by Campbell upon his return to Gothenburg. It gives a detailed account of the adversities of the eventful voyage, largely caused by the dilatoriness of the sottish captain. In addition, the large volume (287 folio pages) contains invaluable information on commercial transactions in Canton, including prices and availability of teas, silks, and porcelain. Another manuscript volume acquired at the same time contains Campbell’s accounts of two other voyages to China (1735-36 and 1738-39), focusing on navigational conditions, weather, and sightings at sea.
