Här skålar Sveriges siste katolska ärkebiskop för Gustav Vasa 1526. Gustav Vasa hade tidigare utnämnt Johannes Magnus till majgreve och vid det här tillfället tackar han genom att skåla för kungen. Majgreve var en medeltida titel med koppling till festerna vid maj- eller pingstfirandet.

Problemet var att ärkebiskopen hade fått för gott självförtroende och kungen uppfattade det som att Johannes Magnus såg sig likvärdig med honom. Detta kunde absolut inte accepteras och Johannes Magnus hamnade i onåd.
Bilden handlar därför också om insikten om en kungs handlingskraft. Det finns en given ordning och den som försöker ändra på detta går det illa för.

King Gustav with Archbishop Johannes Magnus 1526
Here, one of Sweden’s last Catholic archbishops toasts Gustav Vasa in 1526. Gustav Vasa had previously appointed Johannes Magnus as majgreve and on this occasion he is showing his thanks by toasting the king. Majgreve was a Medieval title connected to festivities in May and the celebration of Whitsuntide.
The wallchart shows Gustav Vasa and the archbishop Johannes Magnus standing beside a table with spectators sitting around it. The archbishop has a goblet in his hand. The problem was that the archbishop had become too self-assured and the king considered that Johannes Magnus saw himself as an equal to the king. This absolutely could not be accepted and Johannes Magnus fell into disfavour.
The image therefore gives us insight into the king’s ability to take action. There is a certain hierarchy in place and things do not turn out well for those who attempt to change it.
